The Big Island
The Big Island of Hawaii is more than twice the size of all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined! It is made up of five volcanoes and is over 4,000 square miles and still growing. It has the worlds tallest mountain, Mauna Kea, at 13,796 feet above sea level and 30,000' measured from its base under the sea. It is also home of Kilauea, the planets most active volcano, having earned that title because it has been erupting since January 3, 1983; it has added over 575 acres, creating new landscape, including several black sand beaches. This island offers a tremendous amount of geographic excitement to enjoy as you ride along on your tours. A few miles cycling in any direction, or a few hundred feet in elevation, often places you in a whole new climate and ecosystem.
